Timmins (population 43,000) is a regional hub that serves a catchment area of 150,000. It was founded in 1912 with a major gold discovery, and it remains a mining community today, although its economy presents more opportunity than the city has ever seen in sectors such as research, aerospace, mining supply and manufacturing. It is home to a regional referral hospital, two community colleges, a French-language university and many recreational, social and shopping services. Timmins celebrates diversity and supports its active and vibrant French and indigenous communities. It also embraces newcomers, welcoming new residents from around the world. The annual Multicultural Festival and National Aboriginal Day are huge celebrations, and Le Centre Culturel La Ronde is the spot for francophone arts, crafts, culture and cuisine.
