Chapleau is just a two-hour scenic drive west from the regional centre of Timmins. The community has two claims to fame: it is the home of the world’s largest game preserve, and it won the World Fishing Network’s Ultimate Fishing Town Canada contest in 2011. The Chapleau Game Preserve was established in 1925, covers more than 700,000 hectares, and is a reliable destination for wildlife spotting and birdwatching. Residents enjoy the view of the Kebsquasheshing River, relax in the beauty of Peace Park, and enjoy local hiking trails. Other activities include an in-town golf course, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, ATVing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming and hunting. Goldcorp is developing a new mining operation nearby.
